Cleve Douglass' vocal abilities defy the ordinary classifications of category.
His musical maturity, wide-range of international experience and fearless improvisational skills combine to allow this artist the abilities to deliver fully in a myriad of musical styles including jazz, blues, country, swing, bossa, dance and balladry. His voice is the full expression of American music in all its various forms.
Cleve has become a staple in the New York night club community and has been nominated as Best Male Jazz Vocalist consecutively by the Manhattan Association of Clubs and Cabaret for his performances at Birdland, Iridium, Sweet Basil, Blue Note, The Cotton Club, Rockefeller Center, The Russian Tea Room, and Moscow 57.
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Cleve's mother, big band drummer Marie Brown-Douglass introduced Cleve to the world of professional music at a young age. After early training in classical bel canto singing and Opera, as well as folk singing, Cleve's childhood was filled with performances in live musical theatre, exploring many different styles and periods of American music, and appearing in national television music specials with well-known stars of film and television.
Relocating to New York City eventually led to Cleve's one-man Off-Broadway show entitled 'Unforgettable Nat 'King' Cole'. The show garnered acclaim from critics and audiences alike, with The New York Times review stating that, “Cleve ...seems to be Nat King Cole reincarnate, with a voice as silky as the lapels of his tuxedo.
Over the past two decades, Cleve has made thirty-two tours of Japan working with some of that country's best musicians. He appeared at The Blue Note jazz club in Fukuoka, Japan with sold-out performances over two, month-long engagements. Cleve has recorded several CD's and film soundtracks.
Since 2012 Cleve has done four tours in Russia with NY guitarist Tony Romano and Russian/Isreali saxophonist Lenny Sendersky enjoying sold-out audiences at Philharmonic Halls throughout the continent.
Cleve frequently conducts vocal workshops at schools and universities throughout Japan and in Russia, and maintains a private teaching studio in NYC where he works with other singers of all different genres and from all across the globe.
